As a pediatric emergency medicine physician, I'm trained to act quickly - when a child can't breathe, when bones break, or when lives hang in the balance. But there's a different kind of emergency I see often than I ever expected. One that's silent, invisble and devastating. It's the kid who has come in with stomach pain but really is dealing with anxiety. The teen who tried to end their life..... and survived.It is difficult to treat and discharge a child safely if there is no support system waiting. I can't promise a follow up if there is a six month waitlist for mental health services.
