Why I am running?
I have been in and out of hospitals my whole life. My twin brother, Jonah, had a congenital heart defect called truncus arteriosus that prevented him from having a normal life. Despite his condition, he was involved in school activities and was an incredibly positive and kind child. He loved his family and stuffed animal collection, especially his stuffed owl, Hedwig. In 2014, Jonah passed from complications following his third open-heart surgery. From that moment on, I have tried my best to honor him and his memory through my actions and the opportunity to run in this half-marathon is no exception. Finding small ways to give back to organizations like Children's, which have helped hundreds of kids like my brother and families like mine, is the least I can do. I know the toll that having a sibling or child in the hospital takes on a family, and I recognize that the needs of the family can only be met when staff have access to the most comprehensive training and materials. Raising money for Children's Minnesota's cardiovascular program allows for the expansion of its programs and facilities, allowing for better care for children and their families. It may not seem like a large amount, but every dollar counts.
